Weather Closure

Is the College open or closed?

We are open as normal unless there is a message on the website indicating otherwise.

During inclement weather, the decision to close, or remain open is usually made by 6 a.m. When that decision is made, we publish a message as a banner on the website, send text and email alerts, and publish info on Facebook and Instagram.

Pikes Peak State College stays open during normal operating hours unless we announce a closure.

When the college is closed, there are no activities and there is no access, other than for essential personnel. The ONLY classes that take place during a closure are online classes, which include the online portion of hybrid classes. Online courses continue normally.

How to find out about weather closures

Here are the different ways you can find out the status of PPSC weather closures:

  1. Make sure you are signed up to receive alerts via text message or email through the PPSC Emergency Notification System.

  2. Look for a sitewide closure message on the PPSC website.

  3. Follow PPSC on social media.

  4. Log onto www.flashalert.net. This is a web service that lists closures for most of the local schools, colleges, and large organizations. This website offers an option for entering up to five numbers to receive a text message.

  5. Watch for crawlers on the four local TV stations. They're updated every 15-30 minutes. Also, you can check their websites for closure information.

Pikes Peak State College Inclement Weather Process

  • We announce closures no later than 6 a.m.
  • When PPSC is closed, it means all four campuses are closed: Centennial Campus, Rampart Range Campus, Downtown Campus and Center for Healthcare Simulation and Education.
  • During a closure, all in-person classes and activities are canceled. Only essential personnel are permitted on campuses.
  • The ONLY classes that take place during a closure are online classes, which includes the online portion of hybrid classes. Online courses continue normally.

  • We do NOT call delayed starts. We are either opened or closed.

  • We may close early for weather that arrives during the day.  In those cases, we often close at 5:00PM because darkness and dropping temperatures increase risk both on-campus and traveling around the community. We strive to have notice out two hours prior to closing in these cases.

  • PPSC often follows the decisions of the region’s four largest school districts: Colorado Springs District 11, Academy District 20, School District 49 and Harrison District 2.
  • The President also seeks input from campus facilities and campus police. Facilities provides information about on-campus conditions, especially safety of sidewalks, parking lots, and building conditions.  Campus Police typically offers input on road conditions or closures.

  • If road conditions make you feel unsafe, even if campuses are open, please stay home.
  • Employees should connect with their supervisors and students should communicate with their faculty/instructors.
