Fire Academy Fall Schedule

The fall semester will consist of the FST 1000 – Firefighter I course.  This course is 9 credit hours, ran for the full semester. 

Class dates and times are:
  • Monday and Friday from 9:00am – 2:00pm
  • Thursday from 9:00am – 11:45am
To apply for this course, please fill out the application below and submit it to jamie.gutschick@pikespeak.edu.  The deadline for application acceptance is July 1.


Depending on applications, FST could conduct interviews for entrance into FST 1000.  This decision will be made after the application deadline.

PPRFA Spring Schedule

During the spring semester, we run the Pikes Peak Regional Fire Academy (PPRFA).  The PPRFA consists of the following courses:

  • FST 1000 – Firefighter I
  • FST 1001 – Firefighter II
  • FST 1007 – Hazardous Materials Operations

The PPRFA is a total of 15 credit hours, ran for the full semester.

Class dates and times are:

  • Monday – Friday from 8:00am – 5:00pm

What do PPSC Firefighter Academy students learn?

The 16-week Fire Academy at PPSC teaches you the crucial skills and knowledge to succeed in the fire service. Throughout the program, you will learn:
  • Proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Fire Ground Communications
  • Forcible Entry Techniques
  • Search and Rescue Operations
  • Water Supply Management
  • Fire Prevention and Preparedness
In addition to these key skills, you will undergo rigorous physical training, skills testing, and academic assessment to ensure you are ready for the demands of the fire service.

Our program is ideal for those ready to push their limits physically and mentally to meet the demands of this challenging and rewarding career. It’s crucial to understand the physical requirements and potential disqualifying factors before applying. For questions about these considerations, contact the Fire Science Technology department. 

Consider the following before applying: 

  • Physical Demands: The Firefighter 1 Academy is the most physically strenuous course at PPSC. You'll face 3 graded physical fitness tests, weekly training on the drill ground, and intensive skills-based training. Expect to wear up to 85 lbs. of gear, carry and lift 200 lbs., work in hot environments, and demonstrate excellent coordination. 
  • Academic Rigor: The Fire Academy is as challenging academically as it is physically. Students who fail more than 2 exams or skills tests will be removed from the academy. Using Firefighter 1 & 2 handbooks, students will complete: 
    • 21 Fire Science topics
    • 21 quizzes on major topics
    • 3 cumulative written exams
    • 3 skills-based exams

Fire Academy Estimated Costs

In addition to the estimated costs listed below, there may be other expenses associated with the Firefighter Academy. Financial aid is available to help cover these costs. If you plan to use military benefits while attending PPSC, be sure to connect with the Military and Veterans Program to ensure your classes are covered. 

Fire Academy Estimated Costs: 

  • Tuition/Fees: $1,522.00 
  • Uniform, Gear, & Textbook: $330.00 

Total: Approximately $1,852.00
