Prepare for a rewarding career in law enforcement with the the Pikes Peak Law Enforcement Academy! You'll receive hands-on training in tactical firearms, law enforcement driving, and arrest control techniques. Additionally, you'll learn police procedures and gain a solid understanding of the law as it applies to police work. Upon completing the academy, you'll be eligible to take the Colorado P.O.S.T. exam. After passing, you could pursue careers as a police officer, dispatcher, parole officer, investigator, sheriff's deputy, and more.

Starting Fall 2023, students who enroll in the Pikes Peak Regional Law Enforcement Academy may qualify to have their tuition, fees, course materials, and other costs covered while funding is available through Career Advance Colorado. Students are required to apply for current year FAFSA as well as the Colorado College Opportunity Fund (COF) to be eligible for this program.

What do cadets in the Pikes Peak Regional Law Enforcement Academy learn?

Our academy provides over 700 hours of curriculum and training, preparing you for the Colorado Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) exam. You'll receive hands-on skills training in arrest control, law enforcement driving, and firearms. After completing the academy, you can take the Colorado P.O.S.T. certification exam. A passing score earns you a 3-year P.O.S.T. certification.

The Pikes Peak Regional Law Enforcement Academy provides qualified individuals the opportunity to gain the skills to become a law enforcement officer. The Academy offers a basic recruit curriculum sanctioned by the Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.).

Academy Application Process

Review the PPRLEA checklist to ensure you have all necessary documentation when submitting your Law Enforcement Application Packet. 

You’ll need to write a three-page essay explaining what inspired your interest in a law enforcement career and outlining your short-term or long-term professional goals. The essay should be double-spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman font, and does not require citations. 

While the COVID vaccine is highly recommended, it is not required. Unvaccinated cadets may need to undergo weekly testing if required by college protocols at the time.

Application requires a notary seal. Notary services are available when submitting application.

  • Copy of High School diploma or GED ( college transcripts accepted as well )
  • Get official driving records for Colorado (Go to Driver ID services, then Request a Driver Record) - and any states lived in during the last 10 years.
  • Copy of valid CO Drivers License
  • 3 page typed essay ( see academy information and checklist )
  • Veterans only - copy of DD214

 Completed packets should be dropped off to the faculty building (F300) of the PPSC Centennial Campus

An extensive background check is completed on each applicant. Fingerprint checks will be conducted before the start of the academy. Anyone convicted of a felony will not be eligible to attend the Academy. Certain misdemeanors may disqualify you from admission into the PPRLEA.

Admission into Pikes Peak State College does not guarantee admission into the Pikes Peak Regional Law Enforcement Academy.

Graduation from the Pikes Peak Regional Law Enforcement Academy does not guarantee you will not have to attend a hiring Law Enforcement agency's department specific Law Enforcement Academy.

An oral board evaluation will be required and selection of cadets will be made based on the all information in the application process.

The fall and spring day academies are 17 weeks long. The summer/fall evening academy extends from the summer semester through the fall semester due to the shorter evening class hours. All the academies have skills training (arrest control, firearms, and driving) on the weekends. 

No one convicted of a felony may be certified as a peace officer in Colorado. Certain misdemeanor convictions may prevent an individual from becoming certified as a peace officer in the State of Colorado. 

Some agencies may have you attend their agency specific law enforcement academy as a condition of employment. 

All aspects of the academy must be passed with a 70% or higher average score to graduate or take the P.O.S.T. exam. 

The Pikes Peak Regional Law Enforcement Academy will provide you with the training and skills you will need to pass the Colorado Peace Officers Standards and Training exam. Most law enforcement agencies have their own criteria for hiring. 

Failure of one or more skills portions of the academy will result in the cadet retaking the skills in the next academy. P.O.S.T. certification cannot be granted until successful completion of the entire academy.
