Medical Sciences Program

The Phlebotomy Program:

The Phlebotomy certificate program is offered in the Fall and Spring semesters. Please reach out to the Program Coordinator, Melissa Serna, for more information and to apply.


Nursing Assistant (NUA) Certificate:

Nursing Assistant classes are offered in the Spring, Summer, and Fall semesters with many scheduling options, including evenings and weekends. There are no prerequisites. The coursework takes approximately 8 to 10 weeks to complete. The program offers experiences in labs, nursing homes, and/or hospital settings. Students learn to become direct caregivers as a part of a team.
Students are eligible to take the State certification exam for Nurse Aide after completion of NUA 101, 170, and 171. They will also be eligible to receive a certificate from PPSC.

EMT Certification
EMT Orientation Session -Prior to the start of each semester, there will be an EMT orientation session in preparation for EMS 170. Please watch your student emails for more information. Contact your assigned instructor with any questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

HPR is a discipline prefix designated from the state college system for Health Professional classes. When students take the Medical Terminology class HPR 139 (formerly numbered HPR 178), they must take the PPSC online sections.

This program is financial aid approved. Only the financial aid department can help you with the answer of qualifications. You should meet with your financial aid adviser for assistance. 

You should speak with a program adviser for potential application of work experience. The college does have a program PLA-Prior Learning Assessment, which may allow for the use of work experience or education which may directly apply to your program.

 

Yes, you should look up your classes for specific additions.For some of these classes you will also have to take and pass a criminal background check and drug screening which is a separate out of pocket costs. Check with each department: EMS, CNA, Phlebotomy.

 

  • Currently PPSC does not have a degree program for phlebotomy students. Most of the courses from this phlebotomy certificate program can all apply towards the AAS Medical Assistant degree.

Several courses have remedial course work which must be completed or tested out of CCR 092, MAT 050. You should contact the testing center for more specific information.

 

A national criminal background check and 10-panel drug screen is required of each and every Phlebotomy student at Pikes Peak State College. In order to participate in the Phlebotomy & Advanced Phlebotomy courses, you will be required to order a background check and drug screen through CastleBranch. You will be responsible for the $63.00 fee at the time of order. This is a Colorado Community College System requirement; therefore, any previous background check completed for employment will not suffice.

This policy is implemented and monitored by the PPSC Human Resource Services Department. The screening is not to be completed by students prior to meeting with a program adviser. The screen is completed in HPR 112 Phlebotomy within the first week of the semester, and all policies and requirements are reviewed at that time.Additional information can be found in the Phlebotomy Student Handbook, available under useful links and documents.you need to discuss the background check with the EMS & CNA departments for specifics.

 

Students will have clinical sign up sheets during the semester they are enrolled in HPR 112 and / or HPR 113 courses, to work off campus under the supervision of a laboratory or laboratory department. This is approved and monitored by the phlebotomy faculty.

Clinical sites require students to have a current CPR certification and proof of Vaccination. And the completion of a criminal background check and drug screening.

Emergency Medical Technicians & Certified Nurses Aide programs have individual clinical requirements.

 

An education and career in all of the inclusive certifications, EMT, CNA and phlebotomy can be quite demanding physically and mentally. View the Colorado Community College Essential Skills, which contains certain information concerning physical and academic rigor, which is expected of all phlebotomy students.

No, all courses within the certificate program must be passed with a letter grade of C or better to be applicable to the program.

 

All students must submit an application to graduate to the college by a specified date for the semester of completion. This is an Associates of Applied Science Degree program Allied Health and also includes 3 Certificates of Achievement EMT-CNA & Phlebotomy (if the student also completes HPR 106 Law & Ethics in Healthcare) application to graduate
