What do PPSC Behavioral Health students study?

As a PPSC Behavioral Health student, you’ll get started on a path that includes: 
  • 67 Credit Hour Associate of Applied Science Degree 
  • Blended Coursework in behavioral health theory, skills, and general education 
  • Two Emphasis Areas: Mental Health & Social Work or Addiction Recovery 
  • Preparation for Entry-Level Positions or transfer to a bachelor’s program 
  • Hands-On Experience through exposure to organizations and not-for-profit agencies

The Behavioral Health Plus certificate is perfect for working professionals looking to return to college and enhance their skills. With the growing need for behavioral health services in our communities, this certificate prepares you to meet that demand effectively. Whether you're a teacher, HR provider, nurse, or another professional, you'll gain essential knowledge and practical skills to better serve people in various settings. Upon completion, you'll be better equipped to handle the behavioral health aspects of your job, allowing you to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those you serve.  

We’ll also work with you to determine if Prior Learning Assessment Credits are an option for you!

Helpful tip for prospective students

Note: People with certain criminal convictions may not be eligible for this program. These include violent felonies, felonies involving unlawful sexual behavior, domestic violence felonies, drug violations, and felony child abuse convictions. While individuals with these convictions can complete our program, they may not be able to work with many of our Behavioral Health partners due to legal restrictions. We encourage interested applicants to research the job requirements in their state before enrolling in the program.

Social Work Graphic

The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Behavioral Health program is designed to equip students with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to make a positive impact on individuals and communities facing behavioral health challenges. Emphasis areas for this option include Mental Health and Social Work and Addiction Recovery.

The Addiction Recovery Assistant certificate is designed to provide students with skills to support individuals in their treatment of substance abuse or dependence.

The Behavioral Health Assistant - Qualified BHA Certificate helps prepare students to develop foundational behavioral health knowledge, including entry-level skills in therapeutic communication, case management and documentation, as well as crisis intervention.

The Behavioral Health Assistant II Certificate is designed to provide students the opportunity to explore how diverse cultural backgrounds and perspectives impact care given in behavioral health settings. In addition, this certificate provides experience in behavioral health crisis intervention and case management through documentation of services provided (including interventions, goals, progress, needs assessments, care coordination, etc.).

The Behavioral Health Plus Certificate can be an addition to many degrees (e.g., Certified Nurse Aide, Medical Assistant, Criminal Justice, etc.). It is designed to prepare students to develop foundational behavioral health knowledge, entry-level crisis management, and de-escalation skills, which can be applied in a variety of settings.

The Patient Navigator Certificate is designed to prepare individuals to provide support and guidance to clients in behavioral health settings. Additionally, students will learn about privacy, confidentiality, and ethics in healthcare.
