Understanding Aid Types

Explore the various types of financial aid available at Pikes Peak State College to help you fund your education and achieve your academic goals, including Federal student loans, grants, and work-study, and State of Colorado Aid.

Financial Aid Starts with a Financial Aid Application

Federal Aid starts with submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), or the Colorado Application for State Financial Aid (CASFA).

Financial aid is based on your income and offered in multiple forms:

  • Grants (money you do not pay back)
  • Loans (money you must pay back)
  • Work Study (a type of student employment)
  • Scholarships (money you do not pay back)

Loans, Grants, and Work-Study

Student Loans are an investment in your future - but remember, they must be repaid with interest.

Federal Student Loans have a much lower interest rate than private loans and sometimes the interest is deferred while students are in school. PPSC is a participant in the Federal Direct Loan Program in which students borrow Stafford Loan funds directly from the U.S. Department of Education rather than from a lender.

IMPORTANT! Qualifying for loans starts with completing the FAFSA

Current interest rates on loans disbursed between July 1, 2023 – June 30, 2024, are:

  • Direct Subsidized Loans (undergraduate students) – 5.50% fixed
  • Direct Unsubsidized Loans (undergraduate students) – 5.50% fixed
  • Direct PLUS Loans (parents) – 6.53%

Grants are usually based on financial need and don't have to be repaid. There are many grants that can be awarded, such as the Federal Pell Grant, Colorado Student Grant (CSG), Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) and the Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant (IASG).

IMPORTANT! Qualifying for grants starts with completing the FAFSA

Student employment lets you join the Federal Work-Study Program, where you can work part-time on campus while attending school.

Both federal and state funds are available, and they are paid directly to you.

Please note that all Student Employment awards depend on available funds and might change during the school year without prior notice. If this happens, we will do our best to help you for the rest of the year. This could include student loans, other jobs, and more.

Other Funding

The College Opportunity Fund (COF) is a tuition discount provided by the state of Colorado to students who meet the qualifications for in-state tuition rates and lawful presence in the United States.

Current and former military and dependents, DACA, ASSET, Permanent Residents, and students on visas are all COF eligible.

How to Receive your COF Funds

Generous donations to the PPSC Foundation fund more than 60 scholarship opportunities each year to help make college more affordable. This year the Foundation will award more than $1,200,000 in scholarships to PPSC students. Scholarships help pay for tuition and fees and some also cover books and other costs of attending. There are scholarships available that will help you all the way to graduation with your associate’s degree, and even possibly your bachelor’s degree.
